Searching American University History Photograph and Print Collection

There are several ways to find photographs in this collection:

  • keyword searching
  • browsing by title, subject, places, dates, people, and organizations

    Keyword Searching

To search by keyword, enter words or phrases in the box and click "begin search."

Example: commencement will pull up photographs featuring speakers at various commencement ceremonies.

president (with "ignore word endings") will pull up pictures of American University's presidents, U.S. presidents, and pictures of the AU President's building

president (with "whole word must match") will pull up pictures only with the word "president" in the photograph's description

Use "set preferences" to refine or expand your searches. "Ignore word endings" broadens your search, and "whole word must match" narrows your search. Choose either option and click "set preferences," then start your search. To switch options, choose the other preference and click "set preferences," then run your search again.

You can keyword search by titles, subjects, places, people, and creators of photographs.

Example: williams(searching by creator) will give you a list of pictures by K. Dale Williams.

To browse by these methods, click on these links from the top of any search page.

Titles, subjects, places, people, and organizations are arranged alphabetically.

Three of the best ways to search for photographs are by people, subjects, and organization. Photographs are grouped by people featured in photographs ("Thurgood Marshall"), by subject ("Red Cross--History"), and--under organization--by building ("Battelle Tompkins Library") or event ("Commencement 1962").

Dates are grouped chronologically. Photographs date from 1882 to 1988.
