| ACLU notes: | Regulations establishing responsibilities, policies and procedures for training soldiers in the Code of Conduct and training in survival, evasion, resistance and escape techniques. States that under Geneva Conventions, captors are required to treat POWs humanely and that POWs are not required to give a captor any information beyond name, rank, identification number, and date of birth. Also states that "in recent experience, captors of American personnel have not treated PWs in accordance with the spirit or the letter"of Geneva Conventions; cites methods of exploitation including psychological pressure, physical mistreatment and medical neglect. (2-7; 4-1; 4-6). Guidelines for training to comply with "Code of Conduct" which include requirements to take advantage of ecape opportunities whenever they arise (Article III), refusal to give enemy information aside from name, rank, ID# and DOB "to the utmost of my ability" (Article V). Includes further guidelines for soldiers captured during peacetime and soldiers in terrorist captivity. |
