About This Collection
Dr. R. Orin Cornett taught at Oklahoma Baptist University, Penn State University, and Harvard University before coming to Gallaudet College in 1965 to serve as Vice President for Long Range Planning. He developed Cued Speech, a visual communication system that uses eight handshapes (which represent groups of consonant sounds) and four placements around the face (which represent groups of vowel sounds) that are used in combination with mouth movements of speech to make the sounds of spoken language look different from each other.
The R. Orin Cornett Memorial Cued Speech Collection contains manuscripts and documents on Cued Speech gathered from Dr. Cornett's personal papers, the Gallaudet Cued Speech Office and from the National Cued Speech Association.
